A solar water heater, also called a solar domestic hot water system, uses energy from the sun to heat water for your home. It works in any climate, and once it is installed the fuel, sunshine, is free.

Non-pressurised systems
A non-pressurised solar water heater is a simple, gravity-fed system. Collectors such as evacuated vacuum tubes absorb heat from the sun; the warmed water rises naturally into an insulated storage tank while cooler water sinks to be heated. These systems are cost-effective and suit homes where the overhead water tank sits a few feet higher than the solar collector. They are not designed for high water pressure.
Pressurised systems
A pressurised solar water heater is built to handle high water pressure from a mains supply or pressure pump, delivering strong, consistent hot water to showers and taps. A sealed, insulated tank stores the heated water. These systems suit apartments, high-rise buildings and modern homes with pressure plumbing, and they are usually better at holding temperature than non-pressurised models.
